Matisyahu Day on RFN

Matisyahu with Steve Levine, Jerusalem 2011
Here is a picture of Matisyahu visiting Radio Free Nachlaot's studios at the Jerusalem Media Group's in 2011, where he was interviewed by Steve Levine, and recorded "Some Day" with our friend Hermie Wolf.

We're honoring Matis today on RFN for the high road he took when BDS bullied Rototom Sunsplash into demanding he alone of the dozens of artists make a political statement in order to play. He declined. They cut him from the bill. Antisemitism in the very last place it should be - the musical community. We are officially disgusted.

We find it offensive that not a single one of the dozens of other artists were asked to make a political statement in order to perform at the Rototom Sunsplash Festival in Spain. Only the Jew. We find it offensive that the organizers of Rototom caved to BDS activist demands to single out the only Jewish performer to be examined for his politics. We find it offensive that other artists were not informed of the actions of the Rototom Sunsplash organizers and didn't have the opportunity to protest or to stand with Matisyahu; many of them didn't even hear what was happening until it showed up on social media.

This was Matisyahu's statement today:

"The festival organizers contacted me because they were getting pressure from the BDS movement. They wanted me to write a letter, or make a video, stating my positions on Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to pacify the BDS people. I support peace and compassion for all people. My music speaks for itself, and I do not insert politics into my music. Music has the power to transcend the intellect, ideas, and politics, and it can unite people in the process. The festival kept insisting that I clarify my personal views; which felt like clear pressure to agree with the BDS political agenda. Honestly it was appalling and offensive, that as the one publicly Jewish-American artist scheduled for the festival they were trying to coerce me into political statements. Were any of the other artists scheduled to perform asked to make political statements in order to perform? No artist deserves to be put in such a situation simply to perform his or her art. Regardless of race, creed, country, cultural background, etc, my goal is to play music for all people. As musicians that is what we seek. - Blessed Love, Matis"
Our revenge? MUSIC, and lots of it.

We'll be playing a lot of Matisyahu and a whole lot more of the best Jewish, Israeli, and World Music as well as the best classic rock, and of course, Reb Shlomo, and the Grateful Dead - all right here on Radio Free Nachlaot - broadcasting live 24/6 from Undisclosed Studio B Jerusalem (with a satellite studio "A" in Berkeley, California).

The Halcyon Days of 1977-78 #9DaysofJerry

It's the halcyon days of 1977/78 on Radio Free Nachlaot!
halcyon days. noun. a period of peace and happiness; an idyllic time; also, a period of calm weather during the winter solstice. Word Origin. Greek Alkyone a legend of fourteen windless days.
Everybody's got their favorite Jerry period. Few dispute that the 76-79 era were, relatively speaking to what came before and what would follow, the halcyon days of Jerry's creativity.

Starting about 8:30am Israel time on Thursday morning, we'll be hearing the Grateful Dead 5/25/77 at the Baltimore Civic Center, 10/2/77 at the Paramount Theater, and 5/22/77 at the Sportatorium, Penbroke Pines, Florida. About 4:20pm (yes, and not on purpose either!), we'll hear the Jerry Garcia Band 3/18/78 at the Warner Theater.

Stay tuned for more 9 Days of Jerry on Radio Free Nachlaot!

August 1st - HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JERRY!

"Jerry Garcia" by Ocean Clark
Happy Birthday, Jerry!

It's August 1st, the 73rd anniversary of Jerome John "Jerry" Garcia's birth in San Francisco, California.

It's the beginning of Day One of Radio Free Nachlaot's 6th Annual celebration of Jerry Garcia's life, music, and legacy -  The #9DaysofJerry!

Because of Shabbos being on Saturday, August 1st, we didn't get started until kind of late - but that doesn't matter, because we're going to keep going all the way through the 9DOJ into "Isru Jerry" and beyond!

This year we've decided to break down the #9DaysofJerry by era - beginning at the beginning!

Today, Day#1, we're focusing on the Grateful Dead 1965 - 1968 to include shows from: Avalon Ballroom 10/12/68, Vancouver 7/29 and 7/30 1966, Winterland 3/18/67, and later Sunday afternoon we'll play some early Jerry - with Robert Hunter from 1961 and with the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers in 1962, and a whole bunch more.

Believe it if you need it, and need it if you dare!

Keep tuned to Radio Free Nachlaot during the #9Daysof Jerry to hear everything very, very Jerry, 24/6 - plus some new surprises!

Looking Back, Looking Forward! Our "Citizen Journalist" Reports from Santa Clara & Chicago

What hasn't been written yet about the "Fare Thee Well" shows? From articles about how aging Deadheads are more Republican than Democrat, from heartfelt paeans penned by authentic 1st GenHeads to smarmy little pieces written by people who weren't even born when Jerry died - the world of print journalism has hit the mother lode this summer with all things Grateful Dead.  Looking back at the "Fare Thee Well" shows for a moment, before looking forward to Radio Free Nachlaot's 6th Annual 9 Days of Jerry, this is our two cents.

1) We are neither dead, nor grateful. For those of us still lucky enough to be in the land of the living, we've forgotten one of the basics - "Give me five, I'm still alive, ain't no luck, I learned to duck!" Everybody who is STILL HERE needs to be a little bit more freakin' grateful about it, and stop kvetching about how things "aren't the same". Of COURSE they're not the same. Neither are YOU. Think about it.

2)  It's still a Long, Strange Trip - and it ain't over yet. If we're still alive, then we're still truckin', even if we're calling in our performance or suffering the occasional rain day shutout. If we learned anything from the "Fare Thee Well" experience, it's that we're still a family - even with Uncle Jerry gone these last 20 years. So we don't have the same kind of family reunions we used to have, without him - but we still love to get together.

3) We're Old but not quite In The Way. 1st Generation Deadheads Jim and Patti Stein traveled to Chicago from Berkeley, California for the "Fare Thee Well" Chicago shows (after having seen both Santa Clara shows the week before).  Jim gallantly agreed to be our "Citizen Journalist" on the go, and filed the following reports from both Santa Clara and Chicago, which we aired live on Radio Free Nachlaot during the "Fare Thee Well" week, but now are available in archived form to enjoy again.

About Jim Stein: Jim Stein is based in Alameda, California, a large island in San Francisco bay where he lives with Patti and their son Mitchel. Jim's Deadhead Cred comes from the 200 or so West Coast Dead shows he attended with friends from 1976 to 1987. "I took my retirement in advance," Jim says about his touring years. "You could catch a dozen per year in the Bay Area, so averaging around 20 per year was no problem" Children and a job slowed things down but he still manages to catch at least a few shows with the surviving members every year. In his "real" life, Jim does technical work for Peralta Colleges TV and KGPC radio in Oakland, tends a large vegetable garden and tries to make it to a heavy metal show "about once a year."

... and finally, last but not least, we were so grateful to be able to get a few minutes interview time with super-busy super-mom and super-fan Rachel Molly Loonin, who took her toddler to Chicago without a ticket, a firm place to land, or a plan - but with plenty of love, faith and brilliance!

"Closed for Repairs" from Rosh Chodesh Av - 10 Av

Radio Free Nachlaot will be "Closed for Repairs" from Rosh Chodesh Av (Thursday evening, July 16th) through the Fast of the 9th of Av this year taking place on the 10th of Av (Sunday, July 26th).  We will be back Sunday Night (7/26),  10pm'ish Jerusalem Time (or as long as it takes for Steve to properly caffinate and hydrate!)

This is a departure from our usual all-Torah format during the "9 Days". In previous years, we've switched from our usual music/talk/Torah format to Torah-only. This year we're shutting the whole kit and kaboodle down to do some much-needed tikkunim, both inside and out.

When we reopen for business after the "fast" we'll be rested, refreshed and ready to go, G*d willing, with an updated web site makeover, new music and programming, and of course we'll be excited about RFN's 6th Annual 9 Days of Jerry (August 1st - 9th), our biggest event of the year!

We wish all our listeners a meaningful "9 days" of connecting to our spiritual selves, an easy fast on Tisha b'Av, and we look forward to seeing you on the radio again soon - and if Moshiach happens to come BEFORE Tisha b'Av, we'll break our own rule and come right back on the air to tell you about it!

"C Ya on the Radio" - 10pm Jerusalem time, Sunday July 26th!

1st "Fare Thee Well" Show Set List & More

It seemed like a dream as we were watching the first of the "Fare Thee Well" shows from Santa Clara on our LIVE STREAMING WEBCAST (still time for you to order for the next 4 shows!).

There they were - Bobby (bearded, shaggy and in shorts), Phil (spare, lean and smiling), Mickey and Billy, with Trey (not wearing a Jerry mask as we had hoped), Bruce and Jeff - and it took them the entire first set to really warm up. Notwithstanding - and how can we begrudge them a slow start when it's been 20 years since their last show? - the First Set contained some surprises! Opening with "Truckin", continuing with "Uncle John's Band", "Alligator", "Cumberland Blues", "Born Cross-Eyed / Cream Puff War" and ending with an extended version of "Viola Lee Blues".

The second set is where the energy really kicked in. Opening with "Cryptical Envelopment" and slipping effortlessly into "Dark Star", followed by "St. Stephen / The Eleven" and "Lovelight", followed by Drums/Space and "The Other One". The last song of the second set was an especially poignant "Morning Dew" sung by Bobby - and nobody was missing Jerry more at that moment than Bobby himself.

After the boys exited the stage, Phil came back to greet the crowd and remind us all that he wouldn't be here today if not for an organ donation, and asked us all to consider becoming organ donors ourselves. They returned for an encore - "Casey Jones" (wasn't cocaine one of the reasons Phil needed a new liver to begin with? Was the choice of "Casey Jones" after the organ donation pitch deliberately ironic?)

After they REALLY left the stage, drummer Bill Kreutzmann returned to remark on the RAINBOW over Levis Stadium which had been sighed and photographed and tweeted all over the world. Lauding "what happened last week" (the US Supreme Court upholding the legality of same-sex marriage in all 50 states) as "really important", Billy called attention to the rainbow as a sign of progress.\

Follow us on Twitter @NachlaotRadio for a song-by-song tweetfest for all the "Fare Thee Well" shows!

RFN's own Lorelai will be reporting live from Levis Stadium on Sunday, June 28th - check her out on Facebook (Lorelai Kude) and on Radio Free Nachlaot's FB page

Follow us on Twitter at NachlaotRadio for a live tweeting extravaganza of tonight's Santa Clara show! The boys are taking the stage right now! Excitement is in the air!

#FareTheeWell #Dead50 Santa Clara Show!!!

Gevaldt! The webcast of the first of five "Fare Thee Well" Shows begins at 7pm California time (5am Israel time) this is what the webcast screen looks like now:
...but ... not too long from now, the first of the shows we've been waiting for is about to begin!
It's NOT TOO LATE to purchase a webcast or pay-per-view package! CLICK HERE TO VIEW LIVE STREAMING AND VIDEO ON DEMAND OPTIONS!

Gevaldt, it's borderline Techias Hamaysim (Raising of the Dead") time! After months of anticipation, the purported "final" tour of the four surviving core members of the Grateful Dead (Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann), with support from Trey Anastasio, Jeff Chimenti, and Bruce Hornsby begins TONIGHT at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara, California!

RFN's Lorelai Kude will be going to the Sunday, June 28th show, and will be live tweeting, Facebooking and all her other Social Media moves live from the show.
We've recruited a couple of Freelancers who will be filing audio and written reports of the Santa Clara AND Chicago Shows! You'll be hearing recorded reports from them on the radio! Stay tuned for details!

It can't have escaped your notice that the hullabaloo surrounding the reunion shows has been not exactly "Kosher". From ticket scalping to overpriced VIP packages and all manner of Yuppie-not-Hippie-ish kind of marketing, those who would love to be able to "Steal Your Face" have come out of the virtual woodwork to try to make a buck off of the most devoted fan base in the world - Deadheads.
There's even the very machmir position taken by some which says going to a show is assur because Jerry isn't in this world anymore.
What's undeniable though, at least from this end of the lens, is that EVEN THOUGH JERRY IS GONE, THE MAGIC IS STILL THERE. We can't explain it, and we didn't really anticipate this being the case - and yet it is.
WWJD? What would Jerry do?
We think he'd say it's ok to go to the shows and have a good time, even though he isn't there. We DO think that Jerry and Bill Graham are both sitting together in Heaven, simultaneously cracking up AND preparing thunderbolts to throw at unscrupulous hustlers.
We don't know for sure what Jerry would say, but we DO know that he would remind us to be kind to each other and expect a miracle!

Wildcard Wednesday, Getting Stoked for "Fare Thee Well"

(C) Rosie McGee www.rosiemcgee.com
Lorelai was trying to be casual, but she's getting excited about going to "Fare Thee Well", the "Dead50" show on Sunday, June 28th at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. What got her excited? This post on Facebook from Rosie McGee, Photographer and Storyteller:
Regarding FARE THEE WELL: As a photographer contributing to many of the visual production elements of the FARE THEE WELL concerts, I've been in contact with some of the folks behind the scenes who are furiously preparing for these five behemoth events. And as a friend of the band and crew from the early days through to the present day, I'm happy to know that they've brought back some of the best of the Dead-days techs and crew to handle production chores they always did so well.
I just want you all to know that, every single person working behind the scenes to prepare for the upcoming shows, is working his/her ass off to give you a top-of-the-line, fantastic show; including, of course, the musicians. The technical challenges inherent in a production of this size; broadcast and streamed live; recorded and filmed; attended by hundreds of thousands; etc. are daunting enough. Add to that the (in some cases, unrealistic) expectations of what the music might or might not be; and you have anticipation on an unparalleled scale.
Regardless of ticketing, seating chart and 'who should have been playing lead guitar' issues debated recently, I choose to send huge loving energy and thanks to ALL the folks who are making FARE THEE WELL happen, and who are putting their hearts and souls into doing it well.
I can't even convey the amount of love I have for Phil, Bobby, Billy and Mickey, as I look back on the 50 years and what they have accomplished, and the music they have given us all those years - and hopefully, for many more. Heartfelt thanks, guys!
When it comes right down to it, it's ALL about the music. And each of the five times those guys (and of course, Trey, Jeff and Bruce) step out on the stage in those huge venues, my strongest wish is that all else fades away, and all that's left is the music - and that they (and you) have the BEST TIME EVER!
Love you all - onstage and off.  Rosie
We wanted to share with you, because Rosie got us so encouraged!
Meanwhile - Wednesday on Radio Free Nachlaot -

Start the morning (Israeli time) with the Grateful Dead at the Oakland Coliseum, 8/4/79, Rebbe Nachman’s Tikkun haKlali, and l’kavod Jeff Beck’s birthday: music from The Jeff Beck Group, Beck, Bogert & Appice, and Clapton, Beck and Jimmy Page – AND birthday twin Mick Fleetwood.  Today’s Torah Feature is a Shiur by Reb Nasan Maimon on Rebbe Nachman's Stories (“The Lost Princess”, Part 2), followed by Israeli Soul Afternoon music from Matisyahu, Zion 80, Reb Shlomo Carlebach, Aaron Razel, Aharit HaYamim, and Eitan Katz.
