"The Hope Merchant" Author Adam Berkowitz Interview on RFN

"Heart to Heart with Lorelai" is back with a new episode!

Airing at 6:30pm Israel time on Wednesday, November 26th, Lorelai interviews Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz, author of the new "magical realism" novel "The Hope Merchant".

Is it "magical realism" to write a novel about the workings of a hidden tzadik amongst us? It's a little like the now-defunct TV series "Touch", a little like Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "1000 Years of Solitude" and a lot like something the author is calling "Tikkun Olam Literature".

Listen to this recording HERE

Check out the book (available on Amazon - click HERE)

Enjoy the interview!

You Say It's Our (Fifth) Birthday....!!!

Rosh Chodesh Kislev Tov!

Tov M'od, in fact - it's Radio Free Nachlaot's 5th Birthday!

Join us as we celebrate our Birthday Month on the radio all month long (yeah, we like to milk it!)

WE'RE NOT THE BEST AT WHAT WE DO, WE'RE THE ONLY ONES WHO DO IT.
Streaming the best music, talk & Torah 24/6 from Jerusalem to the World for the last five years, Gevaldt!

Give a big Mazal Tov Shout-out to the RFN Crew!
Papa Radio Steve Levine
Mama Radio Lorelai Kude
DJ Maya Queen of Monday Night Radio
Tzadekis Gadolah & DJ Rena Meriash-levine
Brainiac "Brainwaves" Brian Blum
"Jerusalem Stories" Producers & Creators Jay & Renee Garfinkel...
and so so many more friends who have joined us on-air over the last 5 years, helping to make Radio Free Nachlaot the best Internet radio station in the world!

Here are 5 reasons why we're awesome:
1) We broadcast 24/6 and shut down for Shabbos. No automatic loop play, nothing. Dead air = Kiddush HaShem!
2) ALL our music is hand-programmed. None of this Pandora-ish pick a genre and we'll fill in the blanks for you. Steve Levine and Lorelai Kude take turns programming (throwing the stream back and forth between us every 12 hours) and we're sensitive to the MOOD of the moment, what's happening in the Parsha, in the news, in our lives and the lives of those we care about, etc. - and the music reflects that.
3) We don't have advertisers or play ads during our programming because we wanted to build a listener-supported model. Is it working? You tell us! Both Steve and I have other jobs that pay the bills and we do it anyway.
 4) We're a safe place. When things are stressful you can always listen to other Internet radio stations which broadcast news from Israel - we broadcast LOVE from Israel. You won't get hurt listening to our radio station (unless you're allergic to the Grateful Dead). and finally
5) We've created a world-wide community of listeners who have become friends in real life. You write to us. You visit us, we visit you! It's more than interactive, it's RELATIONSHIP RADIO. Yeah we rock!

Lazer Lloyd "King of Israeli Blues Rock" Coming to San Francisco!

Gevaldt! Our beloved holy brother Lazer Lloyd Blumen, known and loved universally (Reva l'Sheva, Yood) is coming to spread the holy sparks of Blues Rock to the Bay Area!

Lazer Lloyd will play two shows at Biscuits and Blues in San Francisco on Sunday, November 23rd (7pm and 9pm). At only $20 per ticket, you'll want to see both shows!

Radio Free Nachlaot's JET BLUE BLUES HOUR (Wednesdays 1pm Pacific/4pm Eastern/11pm Israel time, sponsored by JetBlue Airways) will rebroadcast this show on November 26th, but IT'S SO MUCH BETTER TO BE ABLE TO BE THERE IN PERSON! Join RFN's own Lorelai Kude and a bunch of merry Blues revelers at Biscuits and Blues on November 23rd!

Lazer Lloyd, Israel's King of Blues Rock, brings to Biscuits and Blues on Sunday Nov. 23th fresh sound, new songs, and deep roots with all-star backing from Felton Crews and Kenny Coleman, the world famous rhythm section of the Chicago Blues Kings. Lazer is an Israeli singer/songwriter and an international recording artist influenced by blues, gospel, southern rock, and the great guitar traditions of power and groove from Hendrix to Wes Montgomery. His music takes the audience into his world from the tender moments of a traveling musician in "By Your Side", to a man struggling with life "Talk", he opens hearts with "world soul groove" on "Way Down" and "Back Porch" and then rocks with intensity and joy on irresistible tunes like "Good Man Down", "Set My Soul Free", and "Rockin' in the Holy Land".

The Lazer Lloyd Band, which has successfully crossed over into the Israeli mainstream music scene, been featured playing live on Israeli Channel 8 TV’s “Guitar Heroes” hosted by Tal Friedman, Channel 10′s “London and Kirschenbaum”, 88FM with Gedi Livneh, as well as on Yoav Kutner’s Army Radio program. Kutner commented, “From the moment the sounds of his blues guitar reached the air it was completely clear that this is an international-level guitarist. His shows are worth every minute. One of the great musicians.”

Coming to San Francisco fresh from his second tour of Russia, Lazer has opened for such artists as Johnny Winter, Prince, Snowy White, and Olie Brown. Lazer Lloyd's singing and guitar playing has been honed to perfection by his constant touring in Israel and he takes it to the next level with the deep groove and power backing of Chicago stars bass player (Felton Crews) and drummer (Kenny Coleman). They will be playing a riveting set of songs previewing Lazer's upcoming 2015 album of new music and some of his greatest classic tunes.

Washington Post: "One of the most popular blues singers and guitarists in Israel is Lazer Lloyd"

"Lazer Lloyd’s show was intense never taking his foot off the pedal and demonstrating guitar playing reminiscent to the great players of the 60s." - Bruce Maltby, Owner Violet's Venue, Barrie, Ontario.

“This is the best Rock N Roll Blues that I have seen in Israel. Amazing, you have to see him live.” Ben Red, 88FM (Israeli radio)

“Lloyd’s guitar skills are impeccable, along with a rich, vocal delivery. A consummate musician, writer and storyteller.” Nashville Blues Society

“He handles his guitar like it was an extension of his lanky, but sturdy body, and the glorious noise that it emits emerges directly from his soul. He’s the best guitarist in Israel.” Jerusalem Post

Save Steven's Garden!

Lorelai's back with a new episode of "Heart to Heart".

Her interview with Shirel Levine, mother of Steven z"l for which "Steven's Garden" in Tzfat is named, will air on Radio Free Nachlaot Wednesday 6pm Israel time.

It's a short but sweet interview about how losing her son Steven to cancer in 1996 inspired another tzadekis, Tamar Bittleman of blessed memory to launch the project that would become "Steven's Garden".

Shirel has, with the significant help of Wendy Kenin (who produced this segment for Mitzvah Media / RFN) launched an Indiegogo fundraising campaign to help take care of a special place that has meant so much to so many people over the last 18 years. Now that Tamar is gone and can't keep up the garden herself, it's up to us to lend a hand.

Please visit the fundraising page at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/steven-s-garden and even the smallest contributions will - like the small seed that began the garden 18 years ago - grow into a beautiful, flourishing "Tree of Life".

If you miss the broadcast, you can listen to the interview with Shirel at: https://app.box.com/s/aoecnawhezs1gkes5j47

Shabbos Nachamu - Shabbos Jerry!

The 9 Days of Jerry always includes one Shabbat, which is of course called "Shabbos Jerry".
The greatest Kiddush HaShem we at Radio Free Nachlaot get to perform all year long is when we TURN OFF THE BROADCAST when Shabbat begins in Jerusalem!
Imagine - our little Internet radio station, with hundreds of people all around the world listening - the biggest audience we have all year - and we turn it off for Shabbat. Gevaldt.
It's always such an amazing feeling - and always wonderful to turn it back on again after Shabbos to have many more listeners return!
We're off the air l'kavod Shabbos Kodesh before 6:55pm Jerusalem time and we'll be BACK with the rest of the entire WEEK of 5th Annual 9 DAYS OF JERRY on Saturday night, sometime after Rabbaynu Tam time (yes as always all times are Jerusalem times!)
The 9 Days of Jerry continue through "Isru Jerry" (Friday August 15th). Much more Jerry to come next week!
From Jerry's Shabbos table to yours - Shabbat Shalom!
(Original photo by Rosie McGee, which I only found out about last December at Blues for Challah - I've been using this picture for years as "Jerry's Shabbos Table." It's really a picture of Jerry at a French chateau in 1971! But what can I say, it's obviously a perfect image to use to celebrate Shabbos Jerry!)

Happy Birthday Jerry Garcia!

August 1st - HAPPY BIRTHDAY JERRY GARCIA!
"Jerry Garcia" by Sheva Chaya www.shevachaya.com

We really, REALLY hope the war in Gaza is over with before the 5th Annual 9 DAYS OF JERRY begins on Radio Free Nachlaot.

Of course no matter what, the show must go on. RFN's 5th Annual 9 Days of Jerry starts at 1pm Jerusalem time on the 10th of Av (Wednesday August 6th and continues non-stop (except for Shabbos of course) through "Isru Jerry", Friday August 15th.

For those who are not familiar with Radio Free Nachlaot's minhagim, during Jewish leap years when Tisha b'Av occurs during the REAL 9 Days of Jerry (August 1st - 9th) we don't start broadcasting our Jerry and Jerry-related music until after Tisha b'Av is over. This has happened to us so far twice during the last five years and because this year is one of those years on the Jewish Calendar, we have to adjust the start of the 9DOJ for after Tisha b'Av.

Mark your calendars! If the war in Gaza isn't over with, someone should set up GIGANTIC speakers all around Gaza's periphery so the population will be forced to listen to non-stop Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia Band and other Jerry-related music at top volume during the 9DOJ, which will either cause peace to descend upon them (G*d willing) or force them to cast themselves into the sea simply to relieve the aural pressure. Either way, it's a win/win.

The 9 Days of Mourning - Followed by The 9 Days of Jerry!

It's Rosh Chodesh Av, the beginning of The 9 Days - that period of time on the Jewish calendar when we turn inward for extreme introspection.

From Rosh Chodesh Av until Tisha b'Av, the Jewish People undergo a 9 day period of acute mourning for the loss of the Holy Temple. We do this every year, and one of the ways we experience this acute mourning is restricting ourselves from hearing music.

As we do every year on Radio Free Nachlaot, we're preparing to do our annual switch-over from 24/6 music, talk & Torah to all-Torah programming during the 9 Days on Radio Free Nachlaot

This is the most challenging programming time of year for us, but it's our 5th consecutive year doing it this way so we've sort of established a rhythm.

We'll be in our all-Torah programming mode from 8pm Jerusalem time on Sunday July 27th until 1pm Jerusalem time on Wednesday, August 6th (10th of Av) when we'll start off with the ultimate bang - the 5th Annual 9 DAYS OF JERRY - until then, hang on and we'll get through this together!

Sunday Night Live - Something special - Let's talk about Peace!

That's right, we have something special for this Sunday's, Sunday Night Live.
So, you know what happens when people finally make it to "Undisclosed Studio B," they feel comfortable and want to come back.
In the case of Renee and Jay Garfinkel, not only are they coming back, but they are coming back with something special to share with all of us.
That's right, this Sunday, July 20th, Jay, Renee and Steve (and Lorelai, although she won't be in Studio "B") will launch the first episode of a new weekly series, Jerusalem Stories. Hosted by veteran radio host Renee Garfnkel, Jerusalem Stories merges music with stories told by inventive magical dreamers, artists, and authors who live in Jerusalem.

This week's program features Renee in conversation with Yehuda Stolov.  Most people know Jerusalem for two things; Torah and conflict…but on this week's guest has made it his life’s mission to make Jerusalem famous for peace.  Dr. Yehuda Stolov has spent 20 years fostering mutual respect and trust among Jews, Muslims and Christians in the Holy Land.  His approach to interfaith dialogue is a personal, intimate, person-to-person approach.  As executive director of the interfaith Encounter Association, Dr. Stolov has brought together rabbis, sheikhs, students, scholars, and ordinary people from many walks of life whose lives are transformed by the encounters. Yehuda Stolov the peacemaker is a Jerusalem Story worth sharing.

Episode 1 of Jerusalem Stories - Sunday, July 20th at 7PM.
We’ll tell you a Jerusalem Story ….  All you have to do is listen.

World Peace Begins With Shalom Bayit

"Free Spirit" author and domestic violence advocate Joshua Safran sits with his mother Miriam Reed who offered tremendous depth to his presentation with her special appearance at Creating Hope, the annual luncheon of the California-based Jewish domestic violence agency Shalom Bayit. View more photos here.
The war in Israel against Hamas aggression and terror is on everybody's mind. Everyone wants "World Peace" but how many of us realize peace begins at home - and in our own hearts?
In light of that thought, Radio Free Nachlaot is proud to air Creating Hope: Joshua Safran at Shalom Bayit's Annual Gala in San Francisco" this week

Wednesday July 16, 2014 at 9am Pacific / 12N Eastern / 7pm Israel time

Some have called violence against women a national security issue and the numbers speak for themselves. In Israel and globally, it has been estimated that 1 in 3 women experience sexual assault in their lifetimes. In April, the White House announced a new initiative to combat violence against women, stating that 1 in 5 women in college experience sexual assault in the USA.

Intimate partner violence is rampant everywhere. "Studies show that 20 to 30% of Jewish families in the US and Israel experience domestic violence," reports Shalom Bayit, a domestic violence prevention and response center in the San Francisco Bay Area. Now in its 22nd year, Shalom Bayit is known nationally for its culturally-specific model and as a pioneer - as US federal policy to prevent violence against women was only established in the 1990's.

This year's keynote address at the Shalom Bayit annual gala, Creating Hope, featured tremendous people sharing their stories. Renowned attorney and author Joshua Safran - made famous by the film "Crime after Crime" for freeing domestic violence victim Debbie Peagler from prison after serving 19 years - offered some stories from his new autobiographical book "Free Spirit."
Extra special at this event, Safran's mother Miriam Reed presented from her perspective about what it was like to endure the violence that her son describes in his book. You can watch a previous reading from Reed's appearance at an October 2013 Shalom Bayit fundraiser here.
Recordings from the Shalom Bayit event that will air on RFN's program include words from Julie Robbins, LSCW, Author Joshua Safran, Memoir Coach Miriam Reed and Shalom Bayit Executive Director Naomi Tucker.

This broadcast is a special MITZVAH MEDIA PRODUCTION for Radio Free Nachlaot, produced by Wendy Kenin. Don't miss it!

Sunday Night Live - Tonight - 8:30PM

Meshenichnas Adar, Marbe B'simcha. We know that the Month of Adar (this year the months of Adar) is a time of happiness.  In fact, that's what we say: "He who enters Adar, increases in Simcha - happiness."
Question is, how do we exit Adar.
I would like to invite you to join us and exit Adar "b'ONEG."
We should exit Adar in Joy, or as we will be doing 'round her, with special "live" music from Studio "B" with our friend Oneg Shemesh.

Oneg is visiting from the U.S., and what would a visit to Israel be without stopping by the radio!
Catch us tonight as we catch up with Oneg - 8:30 PM - Sunday Night Live.

It's Wednesday - "Mit Voch" - Mid week, or "Hump" day.

That's right. Wednesday. It's not last Shabbos, and it's not yet Shabbos. Mid Week. How do we get over the hump, and down the slide to Shabbos?
Well, we have an idea.
7:00 PM - TONIGHT - Let's meet a "new" friend, and see if he can give us a bit of a boost (or push) over to the other side (not the OTHER SIDE Chas v'shalom)!

So, tonight, Live from Studio "B" in Jerusalem,
Meet MAX JARED.
He's Rory's friend from Pardes, he's a singer/songwriter who we featured just last night on the Homegrown Hour, and he's coming to hang out/sit in with us this evening.
What better way to spend Wednesday, don't you agree?
Well I bet if you listen in you will!!!

....and don't forget, at 9:00 PM - "Rambling with Rena" (Yes, Radio with Rena has changed it's name) -
Music only Rena would think to play, which is why we love playing Rena's music.
10:00 - The album of the week, which even if I knew what it will be, I wouldn't tell you.....
and then we'll just go on, and on, and on....
Happy Mid-Week everybody.

Lorelai and Steve - Seperate but together!

Yes, tonight, Sunday Night Live, starting at 7:00 PM Jerusalem Time will feature 2 interviews, recorded live within the past few weeks. This is "live" enough for Sunday Night Live!
First up, Lorelai Kude's Mitzvah Media Production interview with Chloe Valdary.

Chloe is an outspoken young woman from New Orleans who supports Israel and is receiving quite a bit of "social media flak" for it.  You may have listened last Thursday, or maybe you've already downloaded the interview, but maybe you haven't -- and maybe you should just listen to what Chloe and Lorelai have to say.
Then, 8:00 PM'ish, we'll go back a few weeks to Tuesday night's Homegrown Hour with our special guest Rory Michelle.

Steve and Rory settle back for a real warm and intimate session featuring live performances by Rory of some originals and a whole bunch of covers.  This too will be available soon for download, but why wait. Catch it as it happened, tonight on the radio.
There are a few other items of importance that Steve is bound to talk about, but you never know what will be 'cause pre recorded or not, it is Sunday Night Live!

Is it KOSHER to Play the "Race Card"? We Think it's TRAIFE.

Chloe Valdary
Is it KOSHER to call an intelligent, articulate, passionately pro-Israel African American woman a "Negro Uncle Tom" on social media? We think NOT!!! In fact, we think it's TRAIFE!!!

Thursday - Listen to Lorelai's interview with 20 year old New Orleans student and social media sensation Chloé Simone Valdary whose pro-Israel video has gone madly viral, making her a target of racism on Twitter.

"Heart to Heart with Lorelai" airs Thursday on Radio Free Nachlaot at 6:30pm Israel time/8:30am Pacific/10:30am Central/11:30am Eastern RIGHT HERE at www.radiofreenachlaot.com ( H2H is a Mitzvah Media production, produced by Wendy Kenin).

To download the interview with Chloe, CLICK HERE.

Also on RFN's Thursday programming schedule - "Israeli Soul Afternoon" music from Raz Hartman (don't forget to catch him in Oakland, California on March 3rd!), the Bat Ayin Band, and music from previous JEWLICIOUS FESTIVALS (Jewlicious X is this weekend in Long Beach), plus "Temple Talk" with Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven of the Temple Institute (5pm Israel time).

It was 50 Years Ago Today - Again???!!!

Yes, for the 3rd week running, it was 50 years ago today that the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan Show for the 3rd week in a row.  America was crazed over the Beatles, and Ed Sullivan, the master promoter and "barker" that he was knew a good thing when he saw it. His ratings were through the roof, and although we had to sit through a whole bunch of other stuff, we got to see the Beatles on Sunday Night T.V.
Now, for the record, the performance was actually recorded on the afternoon of February 9th.
As Wikipedia reports:
"That afternoon The Beatles recorded Twist And ShoutPlease Please Me and I Want To Hold Your Hand, in front of a different audience to the one that saw their live debut that evening. This set was broadcast on 23 February as the group's third Ed Sullivan appearance, after they had left the US. Before the recording, Sullivan introduced the group thus:
All of us on the show are so darned sorry, and sincerely sorry, that this is the third and thus our last current show with The Beatles, because these youngsters from Liverpool, England, and their conduct over here, not only as fine professional singers but as a group of fine youngsters, will leave an imprint of everyone over here who's met them.
Ed Sullivan

So tonight, Sunday Night Live - radio - will feature (once again) the Beatles!  We'll do a quick review and play appearances numbers one and two, and then, sometime around 8:30 PM Jerusalem Time, we will have appearance number 3 just as it sounded 50 years ago today.

Yes, it was 50 years ago today, and Ed Sullivan introduced the band to play.....

So stay tuned, we might have some other sixties goodies for you, as well.

C Ya on the Radio!

(and for those who are wondering -- the Rory Michelle Homegrown appearance will be re-broadcast NEXT Sunday night - without any interference from the Beatles!
