CHODESH TOV - It's Finally the Month of Shvat!

Wow, Tevet seemed like it lasted a million years - but now it's time to move on, onwards and upwards into the light, people! Chodesh Tov everyone, it's the Month of Shvat - and today is Rosh Chodesh Shvat. Back in the days of the Talmud, Rabbi Shamai and Rabbi Hillel (who were always at odds) disagreed as to which day was the "New Years for the Trees." Shamai (by whom we will hold during the days of the Messiah) held that Rosh Chodesh Shvat was the New Years for the Trees and Hillel (by whom we hold until Messiah comes) said Tu b'Shvat (the 15th of Shvat). So either way it's a good deal and Shvat holds more simcha to come - and a great day of Rosh Chodesh programming on Radio Free Nachlaot!

This morning we've got Musical Cholent Mix until 10am, when we're repeating last night's edition of Benzion Eliyahu Lehrer's "Developing Your Neshama Through the Jewish Year - The Rosh Chodesh Shvat Edition." It'll blow your mind - guaranteed!

From 11am - 1pm it's Blues and Jazz! Ella Fitzgerald "These are the Blues" on the Bluesy Blues Show, and on the Jazzy Jazz Show it's David "Fathead" Newman and Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond

Israeli Soul Afternoon (1pm - 6pm) features music from Moshe Avernic, SoulAviv, Even Sh'siyah, HaDag Nahash, Edem MQuedem, Reb Shlomo, and Eitan Katz.

Music from Moroccan Spirit ("1001 Nights") helps us transition into evening - then at 7pm it's Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven's "TEMPLE TALK" - "Black Soot & Boils!" Yep, it's time to discuss the 10 Plagues of Egypt - sure to be a rousing conversation!

At 8pm it's the "Not For Drag Queens Only" Show Tunes Show featuring RENT - the Original Broadway Cast Recording (we're hoping to have enough money for rent ourselves this month, with G*d's help - hey, don't forget - Radio Free Nachlaot is Member-Supported Internet Radio - you could help us with this, you know? Throw some change into the virtual guitar case using the PayPal icon on our web site! Thanks so much, friends!) :)

After RENT (a little after 10pm) we'll play the Grateful Dead's classic "CRIMSON WHITE AND INDIGO" concert (because you deserve it, and so do we!)

Tomorrow Lorelai "promises" she'll be back with a new edition of "What's New With Lorelai" which usually runs Monday - Thursdays from 10am - 11am but this week is a bit sticky - but she'll be back with her new newsy news show tomorrow, with G*d's help!

CHODESH TOV, EVERYBODY! It's time to let your sap rise - Shvat signals the end of Winter and the promise of the coming Spring - even though it's COLD outside - we're starting moving towards the warmth - can you imagine it yet even if you can't feel it? We can!

New Monday Evening Schedule!

Monday has become crowded, in a good way!
For the next couple of months, MAYA will be Monday nights 9pm - 11pm and Brian Blum's BRAINWAVES will also be on Mondays, from 7pm - 9pm ...
(That means Showtunes on Wednesday nights?) Oy. We need to add an extra day to the schedule - NOT!
Tonight - 7pm, Brian Blum brings us BRAINWAVES, the best Indies ever to rock Internet radio!
Tonight - 9pm, MAYA is back with "Music of the Night"
It's all good, right?
It's all about being flexible ... thank G*d, we have what to be flexible about!

You've Gotta Have HEARTT

The Beatles say: All you need is love. The Broadway Musical "Damn Yankees" reminds us: You've gotta have heart.

Radio Free Nachlaot says: screw SOPA and PIPA - all we really need  is HEARTT - "HELPING ENSURE ARTISTS RIGHTS THROUGH TECHNOLOGY."

Hear all about it on Lorelai's "What's New With Lorelai" Newsy News Show from today ( CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD AND LISTEN TO THE SHOW). The big news on the Internet is that the U.S. Congress is considering "anti-piracy" legislation (called SOPA for the "Stop Online Piracy Act," and  PIPA, unintelligibly named for Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011 ) which would in effect put the burden of anti-piracy, royalty regulation and intellectual copyright protection on web site owners instead of where it belongs - which, according to Lorelai, is upon the ISP providers.

As of December 20th, 2011, there were a total of 6,930,055,154 Internet users in the whole world. You can't use the Internet without an ISP provider. The U.S. Congress needs to scrap their SOPA and PIPA legislation and adopt MY plan (which Lorelai first proposed at a NARAS conference in 2004) called HEARTT - "Helping Ensure Artist's Rights Through Technology." ISP providers would charge each Internet user .01 per month, creating a cash pool out of which all royalties would be paid. Do the math, people. ISP providers NOT web site owners should be responsible for royalty payments.

At the time Lorelai proposed this idea to NARAS (the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences) a.k.a. the "Grammy" people - they thought it was a great idea but also thought that unless the Government pressured ISP providers to do this it wouldn't be done and that "no one wanted to pay more for their internet." She pointed out that no one would have to pay more for their internet - only the ISP providers would have to take a TINY bit LESS profit from each internet user to contribute to the cash pool. Being Capitalists they thought it would amount to "higher taxes," She said "How can charging AT THE MOST .10 more a month (since by my calculations they only needed .01 cents but knowing Capitalism they'd need to charge .10 to be able to reap .01) be considered 'higher taxes'?" and then at that point the conversation turned to which cocktail should be ordered next.

As Lorelai said in her Facebook rant on the subject: Make mine a COSMOPOLITAN please - l'chaim, Neil Portnow, you could have been a contender.

But it's not too late. Strike while the iron is hot - maybe HEARTT was just an idea ahead of its time. It's 2012 people - wake up! Stop SOPA and PIPA - and demand HEARTT!

Today on the Final Vinyl Show - a "Simon Sandwich!" It's Paul Simon's "There Goes Rhymin' Simon," followed by Bonnie Raitt's "Give It Up" and Carly Simon's "No Secrets." (Or does that make it a Raitt sandwich? One man's ceiling is another man's floor - whatever!

On Israeli Soul Afternoon we'll hear "Ha Orot" - Rav Kook Jazz Poetry by Greg Wall and the Modern Prophets with Reb Itzchak Marmostein (Itzchak Evan Shays), John Zorn "The Jewish Jazz Genius," Reb Shlomo, soothing spiritual piano music from Shoshanna Shoshanna, 1001 Nights by Moroccan Spirit and then some great world music by Sanjay Mishtra and Jerry Garcia.

At 7pm tonight Rabbi Chaim Richman brings us the Parsha Shavua - "Vaera" - and at 8pm we'll hear Rav Ozer Bergman's Rebbe Nachman Thursday Night Rebbe Nachman Chebura, and then just for fun we'll hear the ENTIRE recording of the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert from Madison Square Garden in 1992 featuring John Cougar Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, Eddie Vedder, Tracie Chapman, Willie Nelson, Johnny Winter, Ronnie Wood, Ritchie Havens, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Roseanne Cash, Shawn Colvin, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, The Band, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Chrissie Hynde and many, many more - in other words: EVERYBODY.

Followed by - you guessed it! Steve Levine's "COOKIN' FOR SHABBOS!"
Gevaldt, it's Thursday - that can only mean Shabbos is coming! Shabbos is coming, thank G*d!!!

Maya's got great songs for the night - the music just keeps getting better and better - and believe us, when she finally gets in front of the microphone again you're going to hear one happy girl DJ! 9pm - 11pm Jerusalem time - "Wake up everybody, Maya's in The House!"

The Day The Music Died???

Did you hear Lorelai playing "American Pie" earlier this evening? The reference point was - "The Day The Music Died" - and we're talking about Steve Levine's computer! Folks, Radio Free Nachlaot's "Abba," Steve Levine, has NO COMPUTER due to the horrible and painful computer death last week - that means no programming from Undisclosed Studio B (including Brian, Maya, Homegrown, Cookin' for Shabbos, etc.) until we get some help! WE NEED YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS to buy a new broadcast laptop for Steve! Look for the PayPal icon on our web page www.radiofreenachlaot.com and please give generously! We're looking to raise about $800 and/or 3000NIS - that's what it's going to take - won't you help RFN in our time of need???

Why Is This Coming Shmita Different From All Other Shmitas?

Shmita - the laws of how the Land of Israel is to be allowed to rest from it's cycle of productivity - is the subject of tonight's "Sunday Night Live" Show. Rabbi Yitzchak Goldstein of the Diaspora Yeshiva / Mt. Zion gives a fascinating interview on the subject of "Why is this Shmita different from all other Shmitas?" 8pm Jerusalem time tonight. Hint - by the time the next Shmita cycle (which begins three Rosh HaShanahs from now) comes, the majority of Jews in the world will (probably, according to demographers, b'ezrat HaShem), be living in Eretz Yisrael. That's the game-changer with eternal consequences - and something we must make a national decision about NOW, before the 6th year of the Shmita cycle, so we can guarantee a bumper crop and have the resources to carry us through the Torah-mandated Shmita year (the 7th year of the cycle). Complicated? Maybe. Important? Well, consider this - it was because the Jewish People DIDN'T keep Shmita properly that they had to spend 70 years in Babylon. So it's not just a tangential subject - it has immense national and spiritual implications for the Jewish People, and the world at large. Listen to Rabbi Yitzchak Goldstein at 8pm tonight on Radio Free Nachlaot and find out more!

Man Plans, G*d Laughs, Sometimes We Cry ... But The Show Must Go On!

"That's Show Biz," folks! Man plans, G*d laughs, and sometimes we cry. Like last night, when Steve Levine's laptop died a horrible and painful death after two years and two months of continual brave cool runnings on behalf of Radio Free Nachlaot. Baruch Dayan haEmes.

Yes it WAS an elderly laptop (a 2007 HP), and it WAS on it's last leg, but really, did we need this now? OK, so "stuff happens," as we've already proven. So we turn to you, our Radio Free Nachlaot friends and family, for help and support. We need a new laptop for Steve! See the PayPal icon on this web page? Please throw some spare change our way. We need to raise somewhere between $800 and / or 3000NIS to replace his machine - meanwhile, the entire station is running ONLY on Lorelai's laptop. That's a lot of strain and drain on one machine. So thanks for the help - we get by with a little help from our friends!

Today on Radio Free Nachlaot - the Wednesday Musical Cholent Mix from 8am - 10am (do you dig the Deep Purple we played? Gevaldt, it's been a long time since we heard "Book of Taliesyn!"). From 10am - 11am, "What's New With Lorelai" (CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD AND LISTEN TO TODAY'S EPISODE) in which she discusses the 9,000 U.S. Troops being sent to Israel, Saudi Arabia vs. Israel in the credit card hackers smackdown, Israel prepares to shelter Syrian refugees (yes, really!) and of course, the big news - "Moderate Pot Smoking 'Not Bad' For Lungs" - you do the math, people. If you take the advice of Sublime and smoke two joints in the morning, smoke two joints at night, smoke two joints in the afternoon because it makes you feel allright - that's 6 joints a day X 6 days a week (NO smoking on Shabbos!!!), that's about 1,872 joints per year. "Good" for the lungs? OK, that must be medical news all right! :)

On the Bluesy Blues Show  (11am - 12N) we're featuring Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy Live at Ronnie Scott's (1987) followed by the Jazzy Jazz Show (12N - 1pm) it's Bob James "Foreplay" (it's always a good time for foreplay, right?)

Israeli Soul Afternoon )1pm - 6pm) today includes music from In Lakesh (that's Didgeri Trance Music, folks!), selections from our friend Jonty Zweibner's "One Song World" project including music from Schlock Rock, JudaBlue, HaMakor, Yosef Daniel, Shtar, Ben Draiman and Gershon Verboda. We'll also hear from the Kabbalah Dream Orchestra, the Kirtan Rabbi and Klezmorim.

A special Torah treat from Rav Avraham Sutton at 6:30pm - more on his series about Prophecy ("The Possibility of Differentiation") and at 7pm we'll hear Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven's "Temple Talk" on Parsha Shemot - yep, we're going down into Egypt, but you know what that means? It means our redemption is nearer than it was yesterday!

After that - well, who knows? We were supposed to have Maya tonight at 9pm but with a dead laptop in Studio B, we can't promise anything. We DO promise that, with G*d's help (if He can stop laughing long enough!) the show WILL go on. With your help, we'll replace Steve's laptop and the show will go on "as usual." If you can help with a contribution - we thank you VERY SINCERELY AND HEARTILY, just go to the PayPal icon on our web page and make a donation - the radio station you save may be your own!!!

Break On Through To The Other Side

Feeling stuck? Got the mid-month blues yet? It's time to break on through to the other side, yeah!

It's Tevet, Capricorn - got to keep focused! As Reb Shlomo's twin brother Rabbi Eli Chaim zt"l once said about Tevet - YOU'VE GOT TO BE LIKE A HORSE WEARING BLINDERS, YOU'VE GOT TO IGNORE DISTRACTIONS, YOU'VE GOT TO KEEP FOCUSED, MAMASH!

Focus on this, people! Tuesday on Radio Free Nachlaot - Tuesday Morning Musical Cholent Mix is yummy! 8am - 10am this morning (with a heavy flavor of "love songs"), followed by "What's New With Lorelai" (if you missed it, CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD TODAY'S SHOW in which she discussed Obama's alleged readiness to use military force against a nuclear Iran, IDF Hesder Yeshiva students who just CAN'T STAND to hear women singing at military ceremonies (even when they're really off-key and terrible sounding), the fact that 90% of organized terrorism on the Internet takes place in Social Media environments - "are we enablers?," and finally - Saturn! The planet! Why and how Saturn turns into Darth Vader from Star Wars this year!).

On the Final Vinyl Show (11am - 1pm) we're listening to The Beatles "Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," Steely Dan's "Can't Buy a Thrill" and Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks." Classic vinyl, yo!

Today on "Israeli Soul Afternoon" (1pm - 6pm) we'll hear Noah Lubin's "Leaving Egypt," Louis Armstrong "Louis and the Good Book," music from Simply Tsfat, Shlomo Katz, Andy Statman's "The Hidden Light" and Raz Hartman.

6pm - Benzion Lehrer's "Developing Your Neshama Through the Jewish Year" - LIVE from Tzfat's Returning Light Healing Center!
Then we'll throw the stream back to Steve in Jerusalem ...
7pm - HOMEGROWN HOUR!
8pm-ish (after Homegrown) - it's the Newgrass/Bluegrass Show!
9:30-ish - Steve Levine's "That's Rock 'N' Roll" Show!
...and then, who knows? Steve will be driving the musical bus, stay tuned for what happens during the "overnights" - he'll help us break on through ... as The Doors say:
You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side, yeah!

Full Moon Monday

Whoo-Hooo, it's Full Moon Monday - the Full Moon in the Sign of Cancer has us feeling "looney," but that doesn't mean we're going to be playing looney tunes - oh no, it doesn't! Everything we're doing today is perfectly in-sync - from Lorelai's New News Show ("What's New With Lorelai") - 10am - 11am in the morning (CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD AND LISTEN TO TODAY'S EDITION), to the Final Vinyl Show from 11am - 1pm today, featuring David Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" (sorry we missed your birthday yesterday Mr. Starman, we're making up for it today) followed by The Who's "TOMMY" - and then on Israeli Soul Afternoon (1pm - 6pm) we're featuring music from Jon Samuel Nelson, Eitan Katz, Aharit HaYamim, the Bat Ayin Band, Beit HaBubot and HaBanot Nechama.
Switching gears for the evening hours - at 6pm we'll be saying "Happy Birthday" to Joan Baez, who turns 71 years old today! We'll play "Joan Baez in Concert" from 1963, but the truth is her voice is still as pure and beautiful at 71 as it was when she was 21.
Tonight on the "Not For Drag Queens Only Show Tunes Show" at 7pm we'll be listening to the Broadway cast recording of "GYPSY" (l'kavod "Mama Rose" - more on the Full Moon in Cancer theme about "mothers!") followed at 8pm (on the radio side) by BRIAN BLUM'S BRAINWAVES.
On the video side, we'll be broadcasting Rabbi Avraham Aryeh Trugman's Parsha Shavua live on video on our web page from 8 - 10pm.
What's after that? You'll have to ask Steve - he's driving the bus tonight! Meanwhile - have a nice Full Moon Monday, and be nice to your mother!

Number 9, Number 9, Number 9!

That's right - It's the 9th week of the 9 Weeks of Shlomo.  And what better way to cap off this celebration of Shlomo's life, which has featured interviews/sessions with those that knew Shlomo from the inside, than to have our good friend Reb Moish Geller sit in with Steve on Sunday Night Live.  That's right. Tonight, Sunday 01/08/12 - at 8:00 PM Reb Moish will tell us how it was, how it is, and how it's gonna be!!!
I guess in Lorelai's language, today/tonight is the 9 above the 8 -- it's going to be beyond, the beyond!!!!
...and until 8:00 PM you ask?
We have some strong women vocalists all morning,
1:00 pm 'ish - Shlomo teaching on Vayechi
3:00 ---> 8:00 we'll feature some great nigunim, some Later Prophets with Greg Wall, some Lazer Lloyd Unplugged, and all sorts of great music, just like we always do.

C Ya on the Radio.

"What's New With Lorelai" Debuts Today on Radio Free Nachlaot

We debuted a new show today - "What's New With Lorelai" - it's a news show, it's about what's new in the world, on Facebook, in Lorelai's head (no, it's not ABOUT Lorelai and what's new with her!). Not exactly "Garbo Speaks," but a good start to the "other half" of Radio Free Nachlaot.

Everyone knows Steve is really comfortable soloing on the radio, talking to himself (really, talking to our listeners!) but Lorelai is more comfortable in an interview environment, talking to guests and drawing forth from them all sorts of interesting pearls of wisdom. However, we've all accepted the "2012 Challenge," meaning we're trying to stretch beyond our "comfort zone" a little bit. Lorelai will be hosting "What's New With Lorelai" every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am - 11am Israel time.

If you want to get her attention and share with her what YOU think is newsworthy, you can send her a Facebook message, write on her Facebook wall or on Radio Free Nachlaot's Facebook wall, and of course you can email her at: radiofreenachlaot@gmail.com.

We're recording these shows and they're available on-demand as free downloads from our DOWNLOADS PAGE. But meanwhile - here's the link to today's debut show: CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD AND LISTEN TO THE THURSDAY, JANUARY 5th EDITION of "What's New With Lorelai."

Tonight at 7pm we'll be playing Rabbi Chaim Richman's Parsha Shavua ("Vayechi") and at 8pm we're featuring Rav Ozer Bergman's Thursday Night Rebbe Nachman Chebura. At 10pm it's time to cook for Shabbos! Steve Levine's "Cookin' for Shabbos" takes us into the musical kitchen and gives us music to cook your Shabbos food to - and of course tomorrow, it's FRIDAY, Erev Shabbos, join us as we go down the road to Shabbos together.

And it's a special Shabbos (of course ALL Shabboses are special, but this one is REALLY special), it's the last Parsha of the Book of Bereshis ("Genesis"). We're about to finish one Book and begin another: Shemos ("Exodus"), which means - we're going down to Egypt folks, and it's time to start longing for redemption!

We'll sing our redemption songs together, as we continue though the Parshas, through the Jewish Year, through our days and weeks and months - as we keep on climbing, as Reb Shlomo says, "Higher and Higher."

Wednesday, January 4, 2012

WHAT ABOUT ALL THE "BLANK SPACES?" UNPROGRAMMED TIMES?
Well, that's where we get creative. Whenever you see "white space" (unprogrammed time), we're doing our spontaneous thing. Almost every night after our "regular" programming we play full-length concerts: Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, Santana, Clapton, and all Classic Rock, into the wee small hours of the morning. You'll have to tune in and see what we're doing!

One-Two-Three-Tuesday!

Tuesday, the third of January - one, we know one. Two, we knew two ... but what about three?
The truth is: there's MORE than three great things about this Tuesday.
One: It's a beautiful day in the Holy Land!
Two: We've got great music going on for "Israeli Soul Afternoon" today, including selections from David Ziv, Yehuda Polikai, Soul Farm, Y-Love, Aryeh Kunstler, Matisyahu, JudaBlue, Knesiyat HaSechel, Lazer Brody and Moshe Averic.
Three: (We're already at three?) Benzion Lehrer's "Developing Your Neshama Through the Jewish Year" returns tonight at 6pm - live from Tzfat. Join us in person at the Returning Light Healing Center, 12 Korczick St. (in the Artist Quarter, one block up from the Ruth Rimmonim hotel) from 6 -7pm for some in-depth learning.
Four: HOMEGROWN! Yes, as always, the Homegrown Hour is 7-8pm. Unless Steve gets carried away with too much great music, in which case it runs longer.
Five: The Newgrass/Bluegrass Show: After Homegrown we explore the roots and fruits of Bluegrass. A perfect musical "dessert" after Homegrown, and an perfect way to whet your musical appetite for what comes next -
Six: Steve Levine's "That's Rock 'N' Roll" Show! Starts between 9 and 9:30pm, depending on how carried away Steve gets with Bluegrass.
So, you see - it all depends. On you. On us, On the music - it all depends on HKBH, HE is the REAL Master of the Radio, the Head Programmer (yep, He's programming our heads all right!) and of course Giver of All Good Gifts including the gift of musical appreciation.
Thank you, HaShem!
Thanks for listening - all you friends and fans, and of course HKBH is listening, we know that! Don't you know that Radio Free Nachlaot is His favorite Internet radio station? Of course it is!
OK - one, two, three - GO!!! www.radiofreenachlaot.com !

A bunch of Firsts on the Second

That's right. You might drink a fifth, not think twice, march forth, be Henry the Eighth, a seventh son, or have a sixth sense, but all we're going to do is play Firsts, on the second.  Starting around 10:30 this morning you'll hear a bunch of first albums by some of our favorites:  James Taylor, Billy Joel and Jackson Browne to start, We'll take a break with an early Shlomo (Barchi Nafshi) album at noon 'ish, and then after Israeli Soul about 3:30 we'll play Crosby Stills and Nash and the Counting Crows' first albums, as well. There may be time for a few others, we'll just have to wait and see what the radio plays, won't we!

Now, speaking of Firsts, tonight Brainwaves with Brian Blum moves to Monday Nights. Between 8 - 10 PM Brian will bring us his eclectic mix of new wave, alternate, folk, pop, rock, and whatever else he feels like throwing in.  That's right his first show of 2012 on a new night and a new time - Monday 8-10.
...and then at 10, Steve will hang-out with you all for a few hours, so check-in and find out what he's up to.....

01/02/12
or
02/01/12
(depending on which side of the Atlantic you're on)

Happy 2nd everybody.

010112

It's that time again. Time to remember that the year is no longer 11, but 12 - 2012, that is.
Time to remember that Shlomo once said that January 1st is gevaldt. On what other day do so many people wake up and decide "never to do that (fill in your own blank) again."  A day that the whole world is doing Teshuva!!!! GEVALDT!
Well, we have Grateful Dead New Year's Eve shows playing all night and all day long to commemorate what I like to call Grateful Dead Day.  When else (in NY) except for Shavuos Night and maybe Pesach did you actually plan on staying up all night, gathered around the RADIO listening to the Grateful Dead LIVE as they welcomed in the New Year......
But beyond that, we have a special guest coming to undisclosed studio "B" - CHAIM-DOVID and he's coming early, around 4:00 - 4:30? (dare i say 4:20?) to kick off week 8 of the 9 weeks of Shlomo, and have a good time with Lorelai and Steve, carrying on, playing music, talking about Shlomo as they are wont to do.

And you know what, we're going to re-broadcast the whole show at 8:00 when we're scheduled to bring you Sunday Night Live, as we always do.

Stay tuned and enjoy the show!
