SKRUFFY JAZZ, BRAINWAVES DEBUTS AND - MAYA'S BAAAAACK!!!

Wednesday, August 31st - Two of our favorite "Regulars" return, and a new friend joins us for the first time!

At 12 Noon, The Crimson Stone returns with a new season of THE SKRUFFY JAZZ SHOW. Mamash, it's been several weeks without those Skruffy Sounds - we're so ready to slide into some hot jazz with our cool Jazz DJ!

And this evening....

After "ONLY" a brief 28-year hiatus from radio, Jerusalem's own  BRIAN BLUM debuts his new radio show TONIGHT on Radio Free Nachlaot!

BRAINWAVES is an eclectic rock music program spanning multiple genres and decades. Each two-hour sonic adventure might go from modern indie pop rock (Snow Patrol, Fountains of Wayne), to classic 70s progressive (Peter Gabriel-era Genesis), to 80s new wave (A Flock of Seagulls) and 80s jangly pop (early REM, Marshall Crenshaw), to melodic grunge (Smashing Pumpkins), along with a healthy dose of Israeli rock (Aviv Gefen, Erez Lev Ari).

BRAINWAVES - 7pm Jerusalem time tonight (Wednesday, August 31st) - followed immediately at 9pm by MAYA'S MUSIC OF THE NIGHT - Maya is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!

Yes, that's right - our beloved DJ Maya is back from New York (where she fled during The 9 Days of Jerry) and ready to rock your world. Maya (who so far refuses to use Facebook except for the occasional post within Radio Free Nachlaot's FB Fan Page during her shows) sends us the following cryptic yet intriguing message by email:

"Tonight we begin the new season with a musical journey of our own. tonight we will have threesome. Thats right. I bet you want to find out what I mean. only one way to do that, tune in tonight."

OK Maya, what exactly DO you mean by that? What REALLY happened in New York? I guess the only way to find out is to listen. Maya at 9pm - it's going to be quite a night on the radio!

You may note that it's very unlikely you'll be hearing any Grateful Dead from Brian OR Maya! That's ok, you know you'll hear some later - and some Shlomo - gevaldt, we're "Where Shlomo Meets Jerry" but we're where Pearl Jam meets Peter Gabriel, too. That's the beauty of it.

Enjoy the musical ride today!

From Roots to Fruits

"Roots" - Everybody has them. Roots are what keeps us connected to our source - and fruits are what good roots will eventually bear.  This week on Radio Free Nachlaot we get back to our roots - the roots of radio.

Lorelai is back with "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" on Mondays, starting at 8am Jerusalem time - she'll dig down into the roots and bring up the fruits (starting as always with Rebbe Nachman's Tikkun haKlali and continuing with her evocative musical chulent mix that takes a musical "snapshot" of the energy of the moment and creates an emotional musical journey and as she says, "hopefully, a cathartic experience!"

Monday Afternoon - "Israeli Soul" features the best of our Hebrew-language musical programming Today on Israeli Soul afternoon starting at 1pm Jerusalem time we'll be hearing music from  Moshe Averic, Moshe Chouraki, Lazer Brody, Knesiyat haSechel, "Jewish Jazz Genius" John Zorn, Soul Farm, Y-Love, Aryeh Kunsler, Matisyahu, and the Kabbalah Dream Orchestra.

Monday Night at 8pm we'll feature our "Not for Drag Queens Only Show Tunes Show" - the best of Broadway (or Hollywood) musicals. Tonight (kind of "The Best of Both Worlds") - the audio soundtrack of FESTIVAL EXPRESS (always wonderful!)

Tuesday - our DJ Maya is back from her trip to the U.S., and bringing us musical treats for the kick-off of The New Season at 11am, and "One Song World" founder Jonty Zweibner joins us for the HOMEGROWN HOUR at 7pm, followed by Steve Levine's "That's Rock n' Roll" Show at 9pm.

Wednesday we're debuting a new show AND a new DJ! - BRAINWAVES with Brian Blum. Brainwaves is hosted by Jerusalem music enthusiast Brian Blum, back on the air after a 28-year hiatus - don't miss his return to the (virtual) airwaves on Wednesday at 7pm!

Immediately following Brian's debut show, Maya is back at 9pm Wednesday for her "Music of the Night" Show - let's see how Brian's Indie sensibilities and Maya's hard-core rock goddess vibes fit, back-to-back!

That's how the week starts. Let's see what else develops - and if you've got songs you'd like to share with us, bands you'd like to turn us on to, or programming ideas you think we'd be interested in - don't forget, you can always email us! radiofreenachlaot@gmail.com - we love to hear from you!

So - let's get rooty and fruity together this week. It's a new season, a new month is almost upon us (Elul, time for spiritual, emotional, physical and maybe even musical detox!) and we've got a whole lotta radio going on - 24/6, with love from us to you.

The Week Between ...

Ironic that Lorelai, an actual Astrologer, didn't mention the "Week Between" phenomenon to Steve (the whole Mercury Retrograde thing, etc.) but, as it turns out, he figured it out himself.

Yep folks - it's the "Week Between," we're still floating through the air from the denouement of The 9 Days of Jerry until the beginning of our next Broadcast Season ... which looks like it's going to be NEXT week, b'ezrat HaShem.

This is what we can look forward to -

Our DJ Maya will return from her trip to the U.S. to launch the next season of her show at 11am on Tuesday, August 30th.

Jonty Zweibner of "One Song World" joins Steve and Lorelai for the debut of the new season of RFN's  HOMEGROWN HOUR next Tuesday, August 30th at 7pm Jerusalem time.

"The Crimson Stone" brings his Skruffy Jazz Show back on Wednesday, August 31st at 12 Noon.

Wednesday will also be the debut of BRAINWAVES, our new Indie Music Show with Brian Blum at 7pm, leading up to Maya at (Almost) Midnight - 9pm on Wednesday.

Stay tuned for more Programming announcements as we gear up for Season Three!

Meanwhile ... we're still playing the music that's the soundtrack of your lives (and ours). 24/6 from Jerusalem to the World!

Time Flies

To everything - turn, turn, turn - there is a season - turn, turn, turn ....

... and a time for every music under heaven. The question is: What time is it? The musical question is: Does anybody REALLY know what time it is - does anyone really care?"

An ongoing discussion over the past week about the nature of time - "Relative" time vs. "Absolute" time - with an 11 year old obsessed-with-science boy has revealed what we've known all along but tried to forget - that time crawls when you're miserable, G*d forbid, and flies when you're having fun.

So, what kind of time are we having here?

We're in a slightly funny time - Dawg Days, Days Between .... between the end of The 9 Days of Jerry and the beginning of Elul Zman, the month of Elul which precedes Rosh HaShanah.

We're at the cusp of the last month of the year.

We're taking time to catch our breath, before the next great push forward ... breathe deep (while you sleep), breathe deep (the gathering gloom, watch lights fade from every room) ... exhale ...

... and, again. Because in the end, every breath you take, every move you make ... HKBH will be watching (over) you. And us too.

Let us all say Hallelujah, and let us all say: Amen!

Friday, August 19, 2011

.... And Friday is: ISRU JERRY!

Isru Chag is the day after a chag (holiday). Isru means to bind. The day after the chag enjoys an afterglow of the chag and is therefore "bound" in some sense to the chag.

The term comes from a verse in Psalms 118 which refers to the festival offering as a chag and mentions that it was bound to the altar. The words that are used in that verse are Isru Chag.

The 9 Days of Jerry is clearly a chag for Deadheads - and the day after the 9th Day is ... ISRU JERRY!

That's right friends, we're continuing the Long, Strange Trip - all the way until Shabbos! Stay with Radio Free Nachlaot today, all day, as we celebrate Isru Jerry together - because we're having such a good time, it's really, really hard to say goodbye .... let's just say, Shabbat Shalom, ok?

Good Shabbos, everyone! Thanks for making the 2nd Annual 9 Days of Jerry simply AWESOME.

Thursday, August 18, 2011

Day NINE! Day NINE!

It's Day Nine of The 9 Days of Jerry.
Our Special Guest DJ is Reb Moishe Geller - and it's his first time (and Lorelai's too) at the NEW "Undisclosed Studio B" - "B" now stands for BUS, which is how we have to get here, it's so deep within Nachlaot that it came out adjacent to ... perhaps another world altogether.

Day 9. Number 9. Nine fingers.

9 is where it all comes together, falls apart, and comes back together again - higher, more purified, having achieved an entire other level. Above transcendence, it's a place of mystical detachment - which is after all, what you've got to do if you're gonna keep on truckin'.

Don't worry, even though the 9 Days of Jerry "officially" end at Midnight - we're immediately following with "Isru Jerry" on Friday - we're going strong, all the way until Shabbos!

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

It's Day 8! "The 8 Above The 7!"

If you've spent any time learning Kaballah with Rav Avraham Sutton you'll know instantly what we mean when we say: Gevaldt, it's Day 8! The 8 above the 7!

In Kabbalistic terms we're talking SUPER-natural - that which is above the above - and we're pretty sure Day 8 of The 9 Days of Jerry will take you higher and higher!

We had such a great time with Guest DJ Marcia Davidowitz yesterday! Today's Guest DJ is our old friend Drew Tick, who not only has the Jerry connection but the Shlomo Connection as well. Hey! We're "Where Shlomo Meets Jerry," right? See how everything leads up to this day ...

Stay tuned for Drew Tick live at 3pm Jerusalem time on Day 8 of The 9 Days of Jerry!

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

And on the 7th Day....

They played more JERRY!
Yes, we've made it to the 7th Day of Jerry ( 7 of the 9 Days of Jerry, that is)!
Now, don't be confused, usually on the 7th day, we rest -- but Shabbos this year was on the 4th day (of Jerry) so there won't be any resting 'round here, today.

On the Playlist - the early to Mid '80s - Grateful Deadwise, some Bluegrass Jerry to catch us from the other side, and then at 3:00, our guest DJ Marcia Davidowitz will surprise us with her take on Jerry 'til 5.
Now, as far as the evening? Yes, it is Tuesday - and we will have our Homegrown Hour - 7-8 (8:30?) featuring Aryeh Naftaly and the 9 Days of Jerry Band, Set 1, 8/14/11 from Mike's Place. Yessiree - you can't get any more homegrown than that!

8:30 PM - Stay Tuned for Rock and Roll Jerry! That's right, "That's Rock and Roll" is back, this Tuesday focusing on the Rock and Roll side of Jerry Garcia, and the Grateful Dead.  There might even be a "Foundation Stone" album of the week, but I guess we'll all just have to wait and see!
Day 7 - A Whole lot of Jerry Going On!!

C Ya on the Radio!

Monday, August 15, 2011

DAY SIX of The 9 Days of Jerry!!!

It's the morning after Jerryfest - how can we be awake? SUCH a Gratefully Gevaldik Gathering there never was! Described as "Better than Woodstock," Aryeh Naftali and the 9 Days of Jerry Band tore up the stage and blew the house away.

Today is Day 6, and our Special Guest DJ Daniel Pozner is coming in at 12N to give us over the deep musical knowledge he's famous for - don't miss the show today!

Sunday, August 14, 2011

Day 5 of The 9 Days of Jerry - JERRYFEST TONIGHT!

Welcome to DAY 5 of THE 9 DAYS OF JERRY - hope you had a good Shabbos, we sure did! We're back and so is the music - we're going strong, "All Jerry All the Time" all week long until Friday, which will be "Isru Jerry" - because, you know, it's so hard to say goodbye.

Remember - TONIGHT - 10pm Jerusalem time - JERRYFEST, Radio Free Nachlaot's Grateful Dead Tribute Concert and Fundraiser - at Mike's Place (the "New" location in Downtown Jerusalem, off Zion Square next to the Village Green) - it's going to be a GRATEFULLY GEVALDIK GATHERING, with Aryeh Naftali ("The Elevators") leading "The 9 Days of Jerry Band" and special guest stars Yehuda Katz ("Reva l'Sheva"), Lazer Lloyd Blumen ("Yood"), Elijah Sidikman ("Long Time Gone"), Purimm and of course our own STEVE LEVINE on Keys ...

The Show is 30NIS - it's a fundraiser for RFN, remember?
There will be a pre-show Kosher Mexican Dinner at Mike's Place especially for Radio Free Nachlaot fans - "Dinner and Jerryfest" tickets are 100NIS, starts at 8pm - how much better can that get?

SEE YOU TONIGHT AT JERRYFEST!!!
... And enjoy DAY 5 of THE 9 DAYS OF JERRY on Radio Free Nachlaot!

Friday, August 12, 2011

DAY THREE OF THE 9 DAYS OF JERRY ... AND THEN THERE WAS SHABBOS!

DAY THREE of THE 9 DAYS OF JERRY ... We started our day early, with a glimpse at the "In Jerusalem" Section of the Jerusalem Post, where they were nice enough to post a piece (on page 27, entitled "Night of the Living Dead") publicizing Sunday's JERRYFEST CONCERT at Mike's Place (10pm! 30NIS donation to the Radio Free Nachlaot fund raiser!).

A little publicity is always a nice way to start our day!
We're off to the Shuk to hand out flyers... but in the meanwhile, Steve Levine is serving up a delicious afternoon of Jerry-Centric music, including Jerry and David Grisman's "Not for Children Only" album starting at 2pm Jerusalem time!

It's all Jerry, all day ... until Shabbos, of course! Shabbat will be Day Four of the 9 Days of Jerry - Sponsored by HaShem, (a.k.a. "G-d"), Creator of the Universe, "The Big Guy," HKBH ... anyway, He's a HUGE Jerry fan and l'kavod Shabbos Kodesh (when of course we'll be turning OFF the radio) He's sponsoring Day Four by giving us all what we need the most - a rest!

We'll be back Moetzi Shabbos with what's left of Day Four - "Where Shlomo Meets Jerry on Saturday Night" - meanwhile, enjoy the AWESOME music all day today during Day Three of Radio Free Nachlaot's 9 Days of Jerry!
... And don't forget about JERRYFEST on Sunday, August 14th!

Good Shabbos! Good Shabbos!

Thursday, August 11, 2011

DAY TWO OF THE 9 DAYS OF JERRY - HARVEY MILSTEIN GUEST DJ at 3pm!

DAY TWO of The 9 Days of Jerry has begun! And this is how it starts: Lorelai woke up about 6:30am to the sound of ... dead air. Checked the server and saw that Steve's broadcast computer (at his house, all the way on the other side of Greater Nachlaot) pooped out sometime after 4am ... So we're back on-air, playing Jerry Garcia Band from San Francisco, 1978. This is what it's like during The 9 Days of Jerry. We don't (and shouldn't) get any actual SLEEP. Or we should sleep in shifts.THE SHOW MUST GO ON! We're kicking off our Special Guest DJ slots with one of our favorite people (and serial guest), "Uber Deadhead" HARVEY MILSTEIN (pictured here from last year's 9 Days of Jerry) - we're sure Harvey is bringing us goodies galore! Don't forget to listen at 3pm Jerusalem time today to Harvey's show!

THE 2nd ANNUAL 9 DAYS OF JERRY - A FUND RAISER FOR RADIO FREE NACHLAOT

Radio Free Nachlaot - we've been bringing you the best music, talk & Torah 24/6 since November 2009.

Steve Levine and Lorelai Kude (co-founders of Radio Free Nachlaot) are "Deadicated" full-time to their creation, this special place on the Internet "Where Shlomo Meets Jerry."

The 9 Days of Jerry is one of two annual FUND RAISERS we do during the year (the other one is our Birthday - Rosh Chodesh Kislev).

Radio Free Nachlaot is "FREE" to you, the listener, but it costs us money!

Please consider a gift to Radio Free Nachlaot during The 9 Days of Jerry.

We've created many ways for you to give. "Deadicate" a Show. Sponsor 1 of the 9 Days (or the whole event).

Or you can simply MAKE A DONATION by going to our web page www.radiofreenachlaot.com - look for the PayPal icon on the page, and you can use that PayPal "Donation" Icon to send us a donation of any size (we're grateful for your generosity!)

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF RADIO FREE NACHLAOT!
UNBROKEN CHAIN

Jerry Garcia’s impact on generations continues long after his death in 1995. Radio Free Nachlaot is honored and privileged to be part of an “unbroken chain,” playing the musical legacy of Jerry Garcia as a regular mainstay of our musical programming. After all, Radio Free Nachlaot is “Where Shlomo Meets Jerry.”
