Pesach Sheni, Second Chances and The Dark Side of the Moon

To say today's energy is "intense" would be a mild understatement. Not only is it Pesach Sheni, the Jewish holiday of Second Chances, it's also the Yartzeit of Rabbi Meir as well as the anniversary of the day in 1960 that  notorious Nazi mastermind Adolph Eichmann was captured in Buenos Aries Argentina. Not simply a random coincidence, on this day in 1973 Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' hits #1 in the US during a record-breaking 741-week US chart stretch.

Who deserves a Second Chance and who deserves to be hanged by the neck until dead? Clearly Eichmann didn't deserve anything resembling a second chance although he was tried and convicted according to the rule of law and he was hung in accordance with the death penalty he deserved, yet one might say a thousand - or a thousand thousand - deaths couldn't be enough for him. We celebrate his destruction as we celebrate the hanging of Haman during Purim - maybe it's time for a l'chaim after all.

So it's a big, bright ultra-intense Full Moon in Scorpio today. The Moon reaches her fullness this afternoon at 2:19pm Jerusalem Time, at 8 Degrees 7 Minutes of Scorpio. Scorpio rules death, rebirth, "reincarnation" (the process of Gilgulim, all matters of the "supernatural" activity as well as the process best symbolized by a Phoenix rising from the ashes - coming to a new life out of a fiery death. So - see if you can follow this - Pesach Sheni is ALWAYS on 14 Iyar (Taurus/Scorpio) just like Pesach is ALWAYS on 14 Nissan (Aries/Libra). Which means (according to the Theory of Reflective Calendar Opposites discussed in-depth by Lorelai and BenZion Eliyahu Lehrer on the last edition of our "Sunday Night Live" Show) the opposite date on the Hebrew Calendar - 14 Cheshvan - should be examined, and lo and behold the 14th of Cheshvan was the day the British Government finalized the Balfour Declaration, which paved the way for the Modern State of Israel. Talk about "Second Chances!" Talk about death, rebirth and rising from the ashes into a new and living entity - the energy is there for the taking (the asking!) today. Advice? Glad you asked! Make Hibodedut like you've never done before - ask for EVERYTHING, don't be shy!

Today's Torah Schedule:
  • 1pm - Rebbetzin Rena Richman's "Bat Melech" Series focuses on Pesach Sheni

  • 1pm - 6pm: "Israeli Soul" Afternoon features music from Oren Levy, Seth Breitman and BenZion Eliyahu Lehrer.

Recorded on Yom Ha'Zicharon, this wide-ranging interview with Yitzhak Levine on his experiences in the IDF and his feelings and observations regarding being "a Real Israeli" is Radio Free Nachlaot's very first podcast.
We're proud! Also featured in this approximately 22-minute recording is sister Chava Levine and the Imma - Rena Meriash-Levine, weighing in with words of wisdom. Hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording it, and don't forget to join Steve and Lorelai EVERY Sunday Night "LIVE" - we now can take your calls on Skype (more on that later) and together, we CAN make great radio magic!

Happy Earth Day, Happy Birthday Charles Mingus

Today is the 40th Anniversary of "Earth Day," and it seems like just yesterday we were sitting on the lawn of Hale Junior High in our embroidered blue jeans, tie-dyed T-shirts and long hair, strumming guitars and singing "They Paved Paradise and Put Up a Parking Lot" (Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi").

OK, so that particular scene was actually set in 1971 (the SECOND Annual Earth Day) - but still, the memory lingers. Is Planet Earth a better place, a cleaner place, a healthier place than it was 40 years ago? Opinions vary. On one hand, there are many instances in TaNaCH where HaShem seems to promise us that "The Earth is fixed and will not be moved" (we sing this multiple times during Kabbalat Shabbat) and in Genesis we are told to be caretakers of the Earth and to cause it to be subject to us and bring forth bounty.

On the other hand, that's no excuse for behaving irresponsibly with our Natural Resources and acting like they'll be there forever no matter what we do. A personal and subjective observation (by me, Lorelai)  is that it's almost always the most "religious" communities (Evangelical Christians and, very sadly, Haredi Jews) who seem to disregard common decency when it comes to trash (witness picnic areas after either of the aforementioned groups use a public park), use of plastic (which by the way was NOT created on the evening of the 6th Day and there's really no excuse for the amount of it used every Shabbos in Jerusalem in general and Mea Shearim in particular), and recycling (they generally don't).

On the other hand - there's great hope as well. The Eco-Activist Beit HaMidrash Program at Yeshiva Simchat Shlomo is thriving. Rabbi Shaul Judelman continues his work both in Israel and abroad raising Torah-based environmental consciousness. In the North of Israel, Moshe-Tov Krepps and Tzfat's "HaLevav" - the Center for Healthy Living continue regular programs and initiatives centered around practical consciousness of the Earth and hands-on outreach and education activities.

Everyone needs to do their part. Love your Mother Earth and she'll love you back. Rinse out that plastic cup and use it again!

It's also the birthday of jazz musician and human rights activist Charles Mingus. We'll hear Joni Mitchell's Mingus album later today ... but first ...

Today's Torah Schedule:
  • 1pm, 5:45pm - Rabbi Betzalel Phillip Edwards is back with a special and timely Tzibur Moment
  • 2pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven's Temple Talk
  • 3pm, 6:45pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Parsha Shavua (Acharei-Mot-Kedoshim)
  • 4pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Series on the Garments of the High Priest continues with "The Meaning of the Stones" (NOT the Rolling Stones, the stones in the breastplate of the High Priest!)

Today's Music Schedule:
  • 8am - 1pm: Lorelai's Morning Dew for the Morning Jew Show features as many Earth and Ecologically-themed songs as she can find in addition to lots of California-themed songs, as California was and is the leader in Ecological Consciousness for the United States and the World (like it or not, it's true).
  • 1pm - 6pm: "Israeli Soul" Afternoon features new music from Seth Breitman, Shasha Rose, Oren Levi and "Earthbeat stylings" from In Lakesh. Seth Breitman and Oren Levi are artists featured on the Kabbalah Channel (Channel 66 in Israel) and we think you'll really like their music.
  • 6pm - The Blues Project - Projections 1966 - because singing the blues is like a preemptive strike against having the blues!
  • 7pm - Joni Mitchell's controversial (at least for Joni fans) Jazz Masterpiece "Mingus" in it's entirety.
Tonight after Joni - if you're very good and patient, Steve Levine will be back after 9pm for his weekly "Cookin' for Erev Shabbos" Show and there's no telling what will come out of Steve's kitchen tonight, we only know it will be both Kosher AND tasty!
"They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
Put 'em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer farmer
Put away the D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot..."

Taking Your Pulse and Giving You TLC

Radio Free Nachlaot is taking your PULSE today ... hello? Hello? Is there anybody in there? Gevaldt, what an emotional roller-coaster ride we've had here in Eretz Yisrael the last few days - from the sweetness of Shabbos to the sorrow and solemnity of Yom HaZicharon, when we as a Nation remember all who have fallen on our behalf, both in our Armed Forces and by Terrorism. Immediately followed by Yom Ha'azmaout, Israeli Independence Day, when all the suppressed sorrow breaks into joyous rollicking rejoicing and manifests in parades, parties, BBQ, and the famous International Bible Quiz on Israeli TV - and we'd like to say a hearty Kol HaKavod and Mazel Tov to Or Ashual, a 17-year-old student at the Kfar Saba Amana girls' school who kicked butt and won the contest this year!
So - how do you follow that? With lots of TLC - that's what we're all about here on Radio Free Nachlaot. We'll help you nurse your hangover or enable your post-Chag determination to get back to "business as usual," at least until the next holiday - Pesach Sheni next week, followed shortly after that by Lag B'Omer, as we continue to COUNT THE OMER and keep on our path climbing step by step towards Har Sinai and Shavous.

Today's Torah Schedule:
  • 1pm, 8:30pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Parsha Shavua (Achari-Mot-Kodeshim)
  • 2pm - Rebbetzin Rena Richman's "Bat Melech" Series continues with "The Bittersweet Month of Iyar"
  • 3pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's series on the Garments of the High Priest continues with "The Meaning of the Stones" (the stones within the breastplate of the High Priest, that is!)
  • 4pm - Rav Shlomo Carlebach stories, songs & Torahs from a live album recorded at a "Chiloni Kibbutz"

Today's Music Schedule:
  • 8am - 1pm: Lorelai's "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" show featuring lots of post-Chag comfort music from Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lyle Lovett, Nancy Griffith, Leonard Cohen, Led Zepplin, David Crosby, Stix, the Doors, Jimi Cliff, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and more.
  • 1pm - 6pm: "Israeli Soul" Afternoon music from BenZion Eliyahu Lehrer, Akiva Gersh, Bini Landau, Sasson and Yankle Shemesh.
  • 6pm: Kimmi Rudolph's "Israeli Deli" Podcast (thanks Kimi!) featuring Adam Bricks, Feel About, Haymarket Riot, Sagol 50, Elegant Camel, Align, Okapi, the Latter Prophets, Paul Thomas, Ori Dror and Rona Geffen.
  • 7pm: Chillax! We're playing Ras Michael & Sons of Negus. Smoke 'em if you've got 'em (sorry about that!) :)
  • 9pm - Pink Floyd's concert masterpiece PULSE. Ain k'mo PULSE b'kol haOlam as far as live concerts go, we suggest you turn up your speakers VERY loud and place your head betwixt them!

Oh, tidings of comfort and joy indeed - we're staying alive and so are you, b'ezrat HaShem, one day at a time... "Check my pulse, it don't change / stays 72 come shine or rain / give me five, I'm still alive / ain't no luck, I learned to duck!" Keep on truckin' with us here at Radio Free Nachlaot ... and while we're at it, Happy Birthday Queen Elizabeth of England - "Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl but she doesn't have a lot to say..." Hope Liz enjoys Pink Floyd tonight!

Happy Birthday Israel!

Happy Birthday "Modern State" of Israel! You're 62 years young today - and a pretty good placeholder for the Kingdom of Israel (it should be revealed quickly and in our day!).

Rav Kook said that Modern Israel is the first-fruits of the Redemption, and not only do we believe that, we've staked our lives, our families, our fortunes (such as they are) and our sacred honor (to paraphrase the Founding Fathers of the U.S.) on that idea.

Not that we're saying everything here is perfect - far from it. We are very aware that we're living in the uncomfortable and imperfect space between post-Zionism and the pre-Messianic Era, and much of what happens here rings with dissonance between those two poles. But no matter what - there's nothing like waking up in the Jewish Homeland! What's that we smell - can it be the haze of BBQ smoke already hanging over the Holy City like a cloud this morning? Yes, nothing says National Patriotism like grilled meat - if you're in Jerusalem come join the world's biggest BBQ at Gan Sacher today, if you're elsewhere in the Country enjoy our birthday - and Radio Free Nachlaot will continue to bring you the music and Torahs most suited for this special day - we ARE playing several versions of the Grateful Dead's "Fire on the Mountain" as a tribute to the "Al HaAish" (BBQ) culture.

One has to wonder why Israelis insist on grilling a quantity of meat suitable for a small army on a grill the size of a postage stamp? Obviously they've never heard of Texas, or a George Foreman Grill - and yet, they make it happen. Happy Birthday Israel, you're lookin' good and smelling great today - Yom Huledet Sameach!

Yom HaZicharon - Remembering the Fallen of Israel

Today is Yom HaZicharon in Israel, the day we remember the over 22,000 Israeli Soldiers who died defending our country and over 1,700 civilian terror victms.

For New Olims (new immigrants) who didn't grow up here it can be daunting, the grief "regular Israelis" feel on such a day sometimes makes us feel ashamed and unworthy to share a portion of this solemn day. Last night Itzchak Levine, an American Olim who served in the Israeli Army during the Gaza conflict last year, reminded us on-air that we don't show up at these ceremonies to say we've been a part of it, we show up to thank and show our respect to the soldiers who gave their lives so there CAN be a State of Israel for us to make Aliyah to. Itzchak's wisdom was much appreciated and we agree - you don't have to G*d forbid lose a friend or loved one to appreciate the tremendous sacrifice the Israeli people have made in the last 62+ years defending our Land and our right to exist here.

We'll be playing music and Torahs today that reflect the solemnity of the day - and remember that just as Shir HaMalot teaches us that joyful song pouring out of us like streams in the desert follow the long night of weeping, Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) immediately follows Yom HaZicharon. Our mourning indeed will turn into dancing (and BBQ) but we'll never forget those who gave their lives so we could be here today. May all their souls have an Aliyah and may their memory be treasured and recalled before the Throne of Heaven always.

Dudu Dawg l'kavod Shabbos Kodesh AND Moroccan Music

Pictured here is our friend Yosef from "Dudu Dawg" (David's Fish) in the Machanae Yehuda Shuk, who has been giving us great fish AND cooking advice for going on 3 years now ... Yosef is pictured here with Mr. Grouper Senior, and his son Mr. Grouper Junior, who will b'ezrat HaShem be gracing Lorelai's Shabbos Table l'kavod Shabbos Kodesh!

To get Lorelai into the mood to actually COOK the fish Moroccan-style we're playing tunes from "Moroccan Spirit" tonight until we turn the stream back over to Steve for his weekly (now an institution!) "Cooking for Erev Shabbos" Show (Every Thursday night from 9pm until all the cooking is done).

Lorelai's motto regarding fish has been (and continues to be): "RAK DUDU DAG!" ("ONLY David's Fish!") We simply can't buy fish anywhere else, it's the freshest and best and besides that, we're very fond of Yosef, Tuvia, David himself and the rest of the "Dudu Dawg" crew. You too can find the best fish in Jerusalem at David's Fish in the Shuk (on the Agrippas side in the closed shuk השקד 3 directly at the end of the aisle where Uzi Eli's Etrog Juice Stand is or call 02-6246898).

Speaking of fish - maybe we'll play some Phish later ...and we'll let you know how Lorelai's attempt to impress her Moroccan boyfriend turns out (or you'll hear about it on the news under the headline: "Ashkenazi Woman burns down entire neighborhood attempting to cook Sephardi Food, Charges Pending.") The only reason this apparently absurd science project is even being attempted by Lorelai (who has built an entire career and lifestyle around convincing everyone that she can't cook) is because she discovered that the best cook in her boyfriend's gigantic Moroccan family (15 siblings + their assorted spouses and offspring) is actually the Polish Jewish Ashkenazi wife of one of the Moroccan brothers. Yes, Berber Jews from the Atlas Mountains do end up marrying Ashkenazi women, once in a great while, and having seen with her own eyes how the rest of the family admits that Ashkenazi hands can indeed cook Sephardi food - hell, we're going to give it a try.

But what does that have to do with music? Everything! How can this kind of cross-cultural cooking have any chance of success without musical inspiration? Impossible! So relax and enjoy your Thursday night rituals, whatever they may be - and if you're cooking for Shabbos, join Lorelai now or join Steve later (or both!) and let the music move your mind into realms of deliciousness ... Shabbos is coming! Shabbos is coming!

Overcoming A Horror Unimaginable with A Love Supreme

Yom HaZicharon HaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day - continues and we're playing music, Torah and special features which reflect some of the aspects of the Shoah - songs of destruction, redemption, pain, suffering, rebirth and hope.

Last night during our "Sunday Night Live" Show, Rena Levine said something very wise, which was to always try to remember to tell stories about how people helped each other during the Holocaust, and not to allow ourselves to become overcome by the darkness.

Pictured here is Hannah Szenes, the Hungarian Partisan fighter who parachuted into Nazi-occupied Europe to try to save the Jews of Hungary and Yugoslavia who were being deported to the Death Camps. She was captured and executed by the Nazis, but left behind poetry, songs ("Eli, Eli") and most importantly, a spirit of love for life and for the Jewish People that was never extinguished, even in the darkest places.

Blessed is the match consumed in kindling flame.
Blessed is the flame that burns in the secret fastness of the heart.
Blessed is the heart with strength to stop its beating for honor's sake.
Blessed is the match consumed in kindling flame.

Today's Torah Schedule:
  • 1pm: Rabbi Chaim Richman: "The Courage to Move Forward"
  • 2pm: Author Diane Wolf & Host Susan Derwin: "Beyond Anne Frank: Hidden Children of the Holocaust"
  • 3pm - Shlomo Carlebach, "Learning from G-d Himself, Living for Real"
  • 4pm - Rabbi Mendel Kaplan "Kabbalah on the Afterlife"
Today's Music Schedule:
  • 8am - 1pm: Lorelai's Morning Dew for the Morning Jew Show - songs and stories reflecting the themes of Yom HaShoah
  • 1pm - 6pm: Israeli Soul Afternoon featuring Tehillim music and HaBanot Nechama
  • 6pm: John Coltrane's Masterpiece: A Love Supreme
  • 8:15pm - Jackson Browne & Warren Zevon 1976 Live Acoustic
  • 9pm - Bruce Springsteen The Rising
  • 10:30pm - Loggins & Messina On-Stage Live
Friends - let us remember to love and help each other, even in the face of this gathering darkness that sometimes seems overwhelming. Today also marks the day in Jewish History that the Walls of Jericho went a-tumblin' down. How did that happen? 7 days of marching, prayer, faith and, in the end, synchronized sound waves. That's where we come in. Let's march together, pray together, encourage each others faith and, in the end, make a joyful sound of triumph and victory in the face of all impossibility - overcoming a horror unimaginable with a Love Supreme.

Six Million Songs Unsung

Yom HaZichron HaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day - is observed in Israel on the 27th of Nissan, and we're featuring music by David Grisman ("Songs Of Our Fathers") as well as a special interview with Elie Wiesel this afternoon. Tonight on Steve & Lorelai's "Sunday Night Live" Show (8pm - 11:30pm Jerusalem Time) we will explore some of the philosophical and spiritual conundrums that surround the Holocaust. Six million souls were separated from their bodies, six million songs - each soul is a song - gone unsung cannot go unanswered by the universe. We can't answer all of the questions, we can't ask questions in the void of the unanswerable. But we can tell the stories, sing the songs, remember the lives and welcome the souls back into this world as they join us here again, in the final act of the play as all the actors assemble upon the stage. Lights, camera - action! The show must go on, and each of us must play our part. Join us.

We're On Our Way!

Gevaldt, it's been such a Chag - you know here at Radio Free Nachlaot we're a 1-Day Yom Tov kind of Internet Radio Station, B"H, but we realize many of our listeners keep two days . . . when you're back online and listening to us you know we've been thinking of you - we've crossed the Red Sea, we're all caught up with each other, we've seen the dead bodies of the Egyptians on the sea shore, and now - We're On Our Way! To Har Sinai! To receive the Torah! Counting the Omer, counting every step of the way, counting every friend and loved one ... is this what Steely Dan meant by "Countdown to Ecstasy" ? Nothing will make us happier than to have you join us. Connect with Radio Free Nachlaot every day as we journey together through the desert to the mountain - is this what Donovan meant when he wrote "First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is?" Is this what the Grateful Dead meant when they sing "Fire on the Mountain"? We're preparing 49 days of Music for the Journey - stay with us - and we'll stay with you - and we'll all get there together!
